Energy Generation and Innovation

The Net Zero traction and power systems that will fuel the mobility networks of the future need to be cleaner, more sustainable and more energy efficient than the ones we have today, particularly if we are to meet our 2050 Net Zero targets.

GCRE will Establish a Net Zero Railway as a beacon for the global railway industry to follow.

As a site for world class research, development and testing, GCRE will be a facility able to bring mobility and energy innovation together in one place. The same size as Gibraltar, the GCRE site will be capable not only of generating dependable renewable energy which will support the work of the clients using the site but will also be a place where the cutting edge energy and traction systems of tomorrow can be developed, tested and refined.

GCRE will be a magnet facility at the heart of a cluster where people come to develop new thinking and new energy systems for the future, from smarter electrification, to improved energy storage systems through to new hydrogen traction technology.

In demonstrating the practicality of supplying traction loads from renewable energy sources, GCRE will help drive the cutting-edge rail and mobility decarbonisation ambitions of the clients who test there.

The site has significant opportunities for the generation of renewable energy, backed up by grid connections. This power will meet the operational needs of the Net Zero facility itself and our wider estate portfolio, with scalable capacity to also export energy back to the national grid.

Such an approach also increases the long-term commercial potential of the GCRE site.
